So where do you go for a quiet, dog-friendly beach? We recommend the Florida Panhandle. Specifically, the coast from Mexico Beach to St. Marksa, known affectionately as the “Forgotten Beach.”
Top 10 Dog Friendly Beaches In The United States
In this relatively quiet, undeveloped area of the Florida panhandle, you’ll find a laid-back attitude, friendly locals, beautiful white sand beaches, blue Caribbean seas, and plenty of places to let your dog ride the waves with you. Welcome to peeling!
Start your journey by considering the floor plan at Port St. Joe Visitor Center. The staff are here and ready to help. But they were very happy to see our dogs, and invited them in!
City of Port St. Joe is not very big, and you can explore the local attractions on foot in a few hours. We started with the BayWalk, a gravel path that leads from Frank Peet Park to the marina with stunning views of St. John’s Bay. Joseph. The trails take you up to the historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse, built 130 years ago and relocated here in 2014.
One thing you won’t find in Port St. Joe has a bunch of skyscrapers on the beach. There are several pet-friendly hotel options, but most people choose a vacation rental for their stay.

Just nine miles south of downtown Port St. Joea, Salinas Park is the perfect place for a dog-friendly beach walk. Incredibly peaceful, with soft sand and gentle breezes – it’s everything you could want for dog-friendly beaches in the Florida Panhandle.
Dogs and pets are welcome on a lead on the beach every day. Horses are also allowed on the beach here. There were several horse trailers in the parking lot selling rides.
Going west from Salinas Park, Cape San Blas enters the Gulf of Mexico. Part of this narrow finger of land was retained by T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park.
The park has a pet camping area and allows pets on leads on picnic areas and nature trails. Surrounded by water on three sides, it’s a great place to go for a walk and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Dog Friendly Beaches Near Orlando
Florida State Parks do not allow pets on the beaches. But keep reading – there are plenty of public beaches and plenty of other places to explore!
Florida Park Pet Policy Pets are allowed in designated day-use areas at most Florida state parks. Exceptions include, but are not limited to, Eli Schiller Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park and Waikiwachi Springs State Park. Pets must be kept on a lead no longer than six feet and be well behaved at all times. Pet owners are responsible for picking up pet waste and disposing of it appropriately. Pets are not allowed on beaches or playgrounds, swimming pools, cabins, park buildings or concession facilities. The 28 mile barrier island of St George is divided into three parts. St. George Island State Park preserves the eastern nine miles. The central part has access to the public beach, residential areas, restaurants, shops and other commercial facilities. Western End is an exclusive gated community with its own runway and some of the most expensive homes on the Gulf of Mexico.
Our first stop was at a state park, then we discovered that the campground and trails are pet friendly, but the beaches are not. Still, it’s nice to have a little variety, and our dogs really enjoyed the 2.5 mile Gap Point trail through the pine forest. (The car park is at the camp, and the path goes to the left of the playground.)

After your walk, it’s time to hit the pet-friendly beach again! Return to the center of St. George, where the entire public beach is pet-friendly – all day, all year!
As Port St. Joe, these are the top vacation rentals. Although St. The George Inn has pet-friendly rooms, and there are more hotels in Apalachicola, just 12 miles away.
Of all the Florida Panhandle beaches we visited, Alligator Point was the quietest and most secluded. The nearest grocery store was about 30 miles away, but with eight miles of deserted beaches – who needs food?!
Dogs are welcome on a lead here all day, all year round! And with large shells scattered on the beach, it’s an interesting place to walk.

4| Smyrna Dunes Park | About an hour and 15 minutes east of sunny Orlando is Smyrna Dunes Beach Park. Another one on Leash Beach, just south of Ponce de Leon Bay, the Smyrna Dunes provide great beach fun for your four-legged half and a beautiful beach to relax on. A wonderful amenity available to your dog at Smyrna Dunes is the dog bathing area, where you can wash all the sand and sea off your K-9 creature before heading home.
