Best Dog Friendly Oregon Coast

#1- Walk along the Cape Arago Loop Road. The paths are so wide that if you meet other walkers, it’s easy to move past them and still keep your distance.

# 2- Run for free on the open beach! We love all of our beautiful undeveloped beaches here on Oregon’s Adventure Coast. Our beach is great for picnicking, hiking/jogging, or just spending a relaxing day throwing a ball or frisbee with your best friend. If your baby needs a good run, we recommend visiting Horsefall Beach and Bastendorf Beach in North Bend, near Charleston. Both places have long beaches for dogs to run and play. You can find long stretches of beach, wonderful beaches to explore, and lots of places to explore at Lighthouse Beach and Whiskey Run Beach! As a bonus, dogs are allowed off-leash in some areas, as long as they are well behaved and under the owner’s control at all times.

Tip: Go off-peak, like before 9am and/or on weekdays, to find more open spots.

#3- Drive through coastal forest at Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area. Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area (about 30 miles from Highway 101, at Highway 241) is the perfect destination for adventure seekers on two and four wheels! This place is called a “hidden gem in the coastal forests” and leads hikers through waves and coastal forests to two large waterfalls. Vantage features with all modes give you a good view of the falls from the ground, in the middle and above.

#4- See wildlife in Cape Arago National Park. Cape Arago State Park, a mile south of Shore Acres, has picnic tables and hiking trails that take you to the beaches. On a clear day, you can see for miles north and south. Part of the Oregon Coast Wildlife Refuge, Shell Island and Simpson Reef offer excellent opportunities to view marine life and coastal areas of seals and sea lions.

#5- Wander through the beautiful trails and waterways of the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (SSNERR), this beautiful preserve, located at 7 Devils Road near Charleston, off the Cape Arago Highway, covers 19,000 acres and offers miles of beautiful trails for all ability levels and waterways to explore. Visitors say these trails are beautiful and easy to walk on – perfect for hiking with your best friend! SSNERR is home to a variety of marine animals, plants and bird species – so don’t forget to bring your binoculars! Please note that all dogs must be on a lead at all times. Visit the South Slough Reserve website for more information. Click here for a map of the estuary study route (PDF).

#6- Grab a bite or drink with your dog at a dog-friendly restaurant. Not only do the restaurants on Oregon’s Adventure Coast offer delicious food, many of them welcome pets onto their patios! Some local restaurants mentioned in Bring Fido include Blue Heron Bistro, 7 Devil Brewing Co. and High Tide Cafe. We recommend calling ahead to find out what options are available for your four-legged friend. Download our local restaurant guide to stay connected or visit all of our local eateries/restaurants.

#9 – Go on a camping adventure Are you in a pinch? #10 Oregon Trail experts say it takes about 4 weeks to hike the entire 362-mile Oregon River Trail, also known as the OCT. However, when you visit Oregon’s Adventure Coast, you and your dogs can enjoy views of the coast, mountains, and sandy beaches along the OCT—but in a smaller area.

#11- Stay at a pet-friendly hotel (there are many!) After a big day of exploring Southern Oregon, you and your furry friend may be feeling a little “crazy” and need a good night’s rest. Luckily, there are plenty of hotels to choose from! However, we recommend that you book your accommodation as soon as possible and confirm the hotel’s pet policy!

Bonus! – Enjoy nature along the North Spit Trail which includes sand dunes, wetlands and forested islands, the incredible scenery along the North Spit Trail will take your breath away. The best time to visit is between May and October. However, if you visit during the winter and arrive after a storm, there’s a chance you’ll be able to see the wreck of the Sujamezzo, which sank in 1929, as storms sometimes expose the ship due to shifting sand.
