We allow all dogs inside our cellar tasting and part of the wine tasting on our terrace, as long as they are on a leash and friendly. Dinner with the dog is only eaten at the picnic table. Dogs are not allowed inside the restaurant or on the food court / restaurant terrace. If the weather is inclement weather, picnic tables will not be available and it is best to leave your dog at home.

The Finger Lakes region of New York consists of 11 long narrow lakes (hence the “finger lakes”). You’ll find plenty of things to do around each lake, but the three most popular lakes, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake and Cayuga Lake, are where most of the fun takes place.

While doing research for our trip to Finger Lakes, I found many parallels with Traverse City. For example, Finger Lakes is known for being very dog ​​friendly and has many wineries. Replace the grape with a TC cherry!

We visited on the 4th of July and were amazed at what a great time it was. Now this may be due to COVID-19, but apparently this area is not very popular/touristy. However, personally, I never really knew until I was planning our trip there!

The Finger Lakes region is north of Ithaca (where Cornell University is) and sandwiched between the large cities of Rome and Syracuse to the south. As far as Finger Lake destinations go, the most popular cities are found either above or below each Finger Lake, with some in between. Finger Lake canine more cities to locate in this guide.

Coming was our “home” for our trip as we explored the lakes, towns and mountains of the area. It is called the “Crystal City” of America because of its innovation in glass and light bulbs. The first light bulb was built in this city! In addition to the amazing history found here, Corning’s Gaffer District is known for its shops, restaurants, and galleries.

Dog Friendly Finger Lakes Wine Country Itinerary

Located just south of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen is full of small town charm. The town is best known and visited for its beautiful gorge at Watkins Glen State Park. Although the Gorge Trail is not dog friendly, both the Aegean Rim are! I have an entire post dedicated to how to hike Watkins Glen with your dog here.

As you head north across Seneca Lake, you’ll find Geneva at the top. Like Watkins Glen, Geneva is another charming town, less known for its diverse row of houses and popularized as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World” and host of the Lake Trout Derby over Memorial Day weekend. You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly places around Geneva and the beautiful Belhurst Castle, which isn’t dog-friendly but sure looks like it.

From Geneva, head east into Cayuga, and you will come to the town of Seneca. There is so much incredible history here that it is worth exploring! In terms of dog friendliness, you won’t be able to enter the Elizabeth Katy Stanton museum or house, but the park’s trails and sculptures are dog friendly! Also, you can walk across the “It’s a Wonderful Life” bridge!

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time on our trip to fully explore Penn Yan, but it should be on our list of dog-friendly towns to visit in the Finger Lakes. At the far end of Keuka Lake, Penn Yan is a town known for its festivals and arts, home to the Windmill-Fam and Craft Market and the iconic Target Creamery, both of which are dog-friendly. You’ll also find several dog-friendly hotels in Penn Yan.

Watkins Glen State Park is a must see in the Finger Lakes region. Although you can’t take your dog on the Gorge Trail, I recommend walking the dog-friendly Rim Trail. If with other people, one person can ride the Gorge Trail on the way and switch dogs, and another person can ride the Gorge Trail on the way back. This works really well for us. The women’s rights movement was taking place in the streets of Seneca Falls. The Louis sculpture is dog friendly and has great sculptures of great things and images that contributed to the movement. Kirby isn’t too sure about the statue, which makes for a fun experience!
