Dog Friendly Vacations Near Ohio – First stop – northern Ohio! I read that Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the most dog friendly national parks. So my original plan was to spend most of the day exploring the park which has waterfalls so I figured there would be enough water spots to cool off. But, like most planned things, it didn’t work out.
We started the day exploring the Brandywine Gorge, one of the famous trails with a huge waterfall. It was a nice, dark trail, but the lower part of the falls was closed, so we had fewer photo opportunities than I expected. We could see the waterfall, but we wouldn’t have had a great view if we hadn’t gone down a bunch of sketchy stairs. I’m going to jump out of a plane before climbing an open wooden staircase (yeah…problems).

Even though we found this stream to swim in, it was 95 degrees and very humid, so it wasn’t enough to cool off. We hiked the trail 2 miles, played in the water, and took some photos (and lots of water stops) for about an hour, but by then it was completely warm. I didn’t want to take it to the point of heat stroke (which would be a bit of a vacation ruiner) so I decided to spend the day walking in the park.

Instead, I quickly found (thanks Google) a small dog park with a beach about 20 minutes outside of Stowe, Ohio. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend the Bow Wow Beach Dog Park. He absolutely loved bathing and playing with the other pups, but his favorite part was the dog washing station outside. They have 3 spots cut out by the hoses and I gave Otsi a bath before we left (the water turned a little green for him – chin).
When the oats dried, we sat outside at Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream Shop, where dogs are allowed. We each had our own ice cream and it was amazing. Ellie also came as at least 10 people stopped to greet Oates, who loves to greet her elephant. He always laughs.
Our lovely Airbnb hosts suggested we go to Shagrin Falls for a sunset walk. It was such a cute little town with a nice waterfall and just a nice place to walk with Otsu. We were hot and tired from the day so we walked around for about an hour and took some pictures.
On the way back, we stopped at another small waterfall and walked around a bit. So we had a great day exploring waterfalls and eating ice cream in northern Ohio. Andddd trying to (hatch) stay cool. supported by the reader. When you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no cost to you. Learn more.
