We are excited to introduce this unique pilot program that creates outdoor dog spaces where dogs can play, exercise and socialize. The first priority is that these pop-up dog parks are safe for all users.
Note: All dog owners should take a moment to familiarize themselves with the Markham Off Leash Dog Park Code of Conduct and Dog Owner Responsibility Code.
We want to hear from you during the pilot! Your feedback is important to making improvements as we work to better understand what’s best for you and your dog.

As the pilot develops, park planning, operations, animal services and local council members will monitor the program’s progress. Parks Planning is evaluating lessons learned from the pilot, which will be used to develop a long-term plan for off-leash dogs in Markham.
The goal of the program is to give Markham residents more access to off-leash dog parks. We understand that dogs need a place to exercise and relax and we want to provide that in a safe and controlled environment.
A special fence was erected at each test site to seal off the exit point. In the current proposed testing areas, a separate area for small dogs and a separate area for large dogs will be created. It will have an entrance area with double doors, signs to guide you and litter bins to keep the area clean. Do your part to make Markham beautiful.
From summer 2023, we will set up eight pilot sites in the city. Each area will be in a different room, making each part of Markham a comfortable place for dog owners. The pop-up dog parks selected for the pilot program are:
Dogs Welcome In Martinborough
It is located east of Yonge Street and serves residents of high-rise buildings and apartments within walking distance.
The pop-up dog parks are open from 6am to 11pm. Dog parks are open 7 days a week unless closed for maintenance.
Park planning staff carefully selected these test sites based on site selection criteria to make the sites dog friendly. By testing these areas, we can determine if they are suitable for future wireless installations.
We hope you enjoy the Pop-Off-Leash Dog Area Pilot 2023. Giving dogs more space to play and explore safely is an exciting opportunity. Thank you for making Markham a dog friendly town!

Although these animals look very different, all dogs, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, are members of the same species, Canis familiaris. This distinguishes domestic dogs from wild dogs such as coyotes, foxes and wolves.
Domestic dogs are usually kept as pets, although many breeds can live alone in the forest or on city streets. In the year According to a 2016 consumer awareness survey, one third of households worldwide have a dog. This makes the domestic dog the most popular pet on the planet.
As many people believe, all dogs are descended from wolves, but not from the gray wolf (Canis lupus). In fact, DNA studies show that the extinct wolf is the Eurasian ancestor of modern dogs. However, scientists are still working to figure out exactly what species dogs have evolved into.
Also, when dogs diverged from their wild ancestors is a mystery, but genetics suggests it happened between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago.

Although it is not possible to say exactly how the wild wolf became a domesticated dog, most scientists believe that the process happened slowly as wolves became friendlier to humans. Wolves can only do this by eating human waste. After many generations, humans were able to encourage wolves to stay close to them by actively feeding them. Even later, these wolves were welcomed into people’s homes and eventually bred to encourage certain behaviors. All this is believed to have happened thousands of years ago.
Many of the dogs you know and love today are the result of inbreeding between individuals with desirable physical or behavioral traits. For example, about 9,500 years ago, early humans began to breed dogs that could better survive and work in the cold. These dogs form a large dog family that includes breeds such as the husky and malamute, which are now relatively unchanged.
In the same way that humans develop the herding skills of German shepherds, Labrador retrievers can pick up ducks and other animals dropped by hunters, and sausage badgers chase them into burrows. Many additional species have been developed to meet other human needs, such as house protection and pest control.
Some breeds have also been created to make dogs more desirable as companions. For example, the Labradoodle, which combined the characteristics of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle in an attempt to create a hypoallergenic guide dog.
Dogs, Covid And Return To Work
Although people rely more on dogs for their daily tasks than in the past, there are still many modern jobs for dogs.
Domesticated dogs’ sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times better than ours, so dogs now help law enforcement by sniffing out drugs, explosives, and electronic devices. Conservationists can help them find and protect endangered species with their extremely durable hooves.
They assist search and rescue teams following reports of natural disasters or missing persons outdoors. Dogs trained to detect hidden mines and alert enemies are used as allies in military operations. Other dogs help the police find the bodies of fugitives or murder victims. Some work with customs officials looking for contraband, from drugs to ivory. Others are on the front lines tracking predators, guarding cargo ships in remote ports, spotting rodents that might escape, or identifying forest insects in timber shipped overseas.
Similarly, dogs can smell early signs of Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, various types of cancer, epilepsy and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They help the deaf and blind and help those with autism and post-traumatic stress disorder.
